Jos and Wendy Webber of Kahawa Estate coffee picked up four medals for their coffee at the 2018 Sydney Royal Fine Food show. This is their biggest medal haul yet. Their Kahawa ‘Magma’ coffee won a silver medal in the “Piccolo, 100% Australian grown coffee from a Single Origin or Regional Blend Estate” class, and were the highest ranked coffee in the class. The judges commented that this year’s results “shows that the coffee industry in Australia not only has the ability to roast and blend good coffee but can grow good coffee.”
Kahawa ‘Magma’ was also awarded bronze medals in the “Espresso, 100% Australian grown coffee from a Single Origin or Regional Blend Estate” class and the “Latte, 100% Australian grown coffee from a Single Origin or Regional Blend Estate” class. Their Kahawa ‘Lava’ coffee won a bronze medal in the “Plunger Coffee, 100% Australian grown coffee from a Single Origin or Regional Blend Estate” class.
Established in 1998, the Sydney Royal Coffee Competition is one of Australia’s leading coffee competitions. The competition is independent, authoritative and impartial. The Competition is held in February every year as part of the Summer Fine Food Show. Coffee can be Australian grown or imported, provided the beans are roasted in Australia.
In 2018, there were almost 350 entries across 13 classes from all across Australia. Both Australian grown coffee and international coffees were featured. Sydney Royal Competitions set the benchmark for agricultural excellence that underpins Australia’s agricultural performance, ensuring a viable and prosperous future for rural communities.
